THE TRADESMEN is an in-depth essay of two and one-half years in the life of a modern construction organization, on a difficult mission to build one of the nation’s last mega-sized fossil power stations.
In an isolated Front Range setting on the outskirts of Pueblo, Colorado, a giant electrical generating station arises from the skilled hands and tough-minded, independent outlook of the American Tradesmen. From the iron workers who brave dizzying heights and strong winds to build the initial framework-- to the boilermakers and pipefitters who also risk it all to finish the job and bring home a paycheck-- this is the complicated story of how America gets its most reliable, though controversial source of energy.
For 26 months, our camera crews pushed the limits of conditions in an intense construction environment—a strange choreography of 1000 workers and 1000 crane lifts, set against the forces of weather along the Colorado Front Range. In the end, the documentary delivers a new perspective on the financial risks of running a business, as well as a greater respect for how things get built. THE TRADESMEN puts a face on who is on the other end of the switch when we casually turn our lights on. It is a rare story of something “Made In America”.
